By hiring McDonald’s staff.
Their service is way below par. A few outlets in Penang have closed down after a while. This is what I encountered few days ago in this spanking new outlet in Gurney Plaza.
1) Cheap styrofoam cup for hot coffee. I mean real cheap as in flimsy. The cup toppled and coffee spilled all over.
2) We changed table and told the staff but can you believe this? No one cleaned the place and eventually, the coffee (a lot of them) started flowing ALL OVER the tiled floor.
3) Orders were never delivered until we reminded them several times. (same goes with other patron)
4) They delivered twice for some of the foods.
5) None of the staffs smile.
6) They have this fearful looks on their face. I spoke to them in their mother’s tongue and that somewhate makes them a little more at ease.
7) Onion rings were overfried.
Mozza burger was cold and dried.
The place is only about 25% full on the day I went. Imagine when there is a huge crowd.
It is a pity really because I do like their onion rings, mozza burger (when prepared fresh), waffle with syrup and butter plus the rootbeer. I remember their fried chicken is not bad too because the skin is crispy with a nice taste of garlic, much better than McD and crispier than KFC original.

That’s why a lot of the outlets are closing all over Malaysia. One exception is their drive in outlet in PJ just opposite Amcorp Mall. That’s the only place where their service is up to the mark.
hrm. i don’t really like A&W except for their awesome waffles with ice creams.
couldn’t agree more with adam.. only a&w at amcorp mall can survive
A&W is not closing down in KLCC and Midvalley, see the crowd…
Oldest fast food chain in Malaysia. You won’t see much initiative because lousy management. I don’t think KFC and McD is any better, except they have more branch.
I still remember the day Kentucky fried chicken day run by the chicken king, where chicken are big and juicy. McD cheese inside McEgg is not cheating; A&W float never use cheapo icecream.
excellent photo journal! Simply amazing images and stories. good job.
All A&W outlets in Kuching closed shop years ago.
Irene – What a waste to good food ya? A&W has some nice combination of foods not found at other fast food outlets and yet, they wasted it due to bad service (more like bad attitude).
gp – Thanks! Your comment is very motivating.
moo_t – Everything down the drain. So sayang.
kenny – Their food is not bad but some places services are real bad.
alicia – I found one in Seremban which is good too. They have lots of varieties of icecream there.
chengsim – I love the rootbeer minus the float.
Adam – I wonder why never learn from their past bad records? Their A&W bear mascot is so cute!
They are opening more outlets nowadays – love their waffles which they do so well. The drive in near Amcorp Mall is always packed with people.
chnage the mgmt or owner….or shift the main office frmo PJ to Penang lar
