Comfort foods – Sesame, ginger & egg

This is an old, old photo in my archive. I had previously cooked something similar in 2005 in my other food blog. Ginger and sesame oil remains my comfort food when I am sick.

Many people may not be able to tolerate the smell of sesame oil and ginger but I love it. It reminds me of the post-natal or confinement period when I was just recovering from the labour of giving birth to a baby. The period when I was treated like a queen with expensive foods and lots of pampering.

The other day, I lost my sense of smell and taste due to a very bad flu. Somehow, the thought of having searing hot ginger and sesame oil seems mouth-watering to me. Many people would have shied away from these two ingredients because they deem it very ‘heaty’. However, I don’t believe in such stuffs so I made myself a mean looking omelette. I used lots of ginger and fried it with sesame oil. Then, I knocked in two eggs and yummy, it was so comforting. I was left sweating after a meal and it felt good.

I wouldn’t advice those folks who believe in ‘heaty’ to try it because most probably you will lose your voice and ended up with a bad sore-throat. Let’s just say that the mind is very powerful and you will be psyched into believing what grandma said. Me? I don’t believe in heaty and cold tales. Hehehe.

i too love sesame oil and ginger. i love to cook sesame oil – ginger – egg and chicken.
i normally will dry the egg in sesame oil then put aside. fry the ginger till fragrance. i will then put in the chicken and let it fry till a bit brown before i add in water and cook it. half way, i will put the fried egg to cook together with the chicken. before serving, i will put few more drops of sesame oil. love the taste and love the smell. 🙂 you can try that if you like sesame oil and ginger a lot.

Reading this, I’ve been reminded of how fabulous this simple dish tastes 🙂 I’ve had it before from the home catering. I never thought it would be so simple to prepare! I have to whip up one some time.

Lillian, like you, my mom absolutely loves this dish. But yours looks more “wet” than the ones my mom makes.

As for me, I don’t care much for the taste of ginger (except for the dried pickled type), but love sesame seed oil on my instant noodles or porridge. Sesame seed oil is also very good to push out the wind in the stomach.

rasa malaysia? – Huh? I dunno how my template got back to the wordpress default. LOL.

sheryl – I like my eggs just cook, so probably that explains the dampness.

durianberry – sesame oil and ginger makes a lot of nice dishes, with pork, chicken or even pork liver

kath – Thanks for the recipe!

    siong – Thank you!
