I hate premix. And the only reason I buy them is because I am curious or I am dead bored. So, yesterday, we passed by these rows of old, old, dinghy shops in Carnavon Street. The street is famous for selling coffins, school books and there is one that is probably the oldest baking specialist shop there.
So, my kids and I who were in the neighbourhood dropped in and bought a packet of blueberry muffin and muffin casings. I bought the Reynolds aluminium muffin/cupcake casing but it turned out to be too soft and I need to put them in my muffin tin. *sigh* Wasted my RM4.20 for 32 casings.
However much I hate premix, I must admit it is really idiot proof and even my five years old kid can make a batch of muffins with my supervision. All I need is to make sure that he doesn’t stuff his fingers into my mixer. 😛 Otherwise, he enjoys breaking the eggs, weighing the ingredients and arranging the muffin casings.
In a few minutes, we got hot muffins out of the oven. It is certainly nice on a cold, rainy morning with a mug of hot tea.
For RM5.50 for the packet of muffin premix, half a cup of oil (I use part olive/part vegetable oil) and water, we get 18 delicious muffins. It is much more delicious than those sold by cheap bakeries. But I would prefer to make my own muffins because it has less essence and not so sweet.
I have the recipe for banana and oats muffin which is not a premix.
So, do you dislike cake premix and yet, love the convenience?
I don’t really like the strong essence smell and taste in the premix too, but you have to admit they make fast and tasty muffins, especially if you have a potluck or party to take them to. 🙂 I might try your recipe some day. I love muffins.
I haven’t been baking regularly but normally I’ll refer to recipes. I will have the recipes modified to less sugar and fat. They normally don’t turn out as moist and that’s why I always have to eat them all by myself. No one at home go with my tastes. LoL
I think my mum has some like business relation with them. I love premix. Kaka, cause my cake will less likely fail. =P But it’s fun. I do refer to recipe books and stuff to bake but i find premix easier cause you won’t like miss some ingredients lor. It’s all in it anyway. I love blueberry muffins. Been quite some time since I last ate blueberry muffins
Oo! Oo! But my shop carry alot of premix leh – cakes, muffin, bread, pancake, waffle & cookies leh. 🙁
normally i prefer not to use premix. but like you said, premixes are really fast, easy and idiot proof! i guess the key is to find a premix brand that you like. 🙂
I have not try premix… but for convenient sake… will try one of these days.
