Cocktails for New Year’s Eve

The economists predict a gloomy year ahead. The financial experts tell us it is going to be a bad 2009. The fengshui masters and fortune tellers tell us the year 2009 will start ok but end badly. So, with a bad year ahead of us, why not get drunk and stop worrying when there is nothing we can do to evade the bad times ahead?

Of course, you have to be legally old enough to drink and you have to be morally or religiously fine to get drunk. Then, you have to be able to afford to get drunk because it is mighty expensive to get drunk, you know? A glass of cocktail costs over RM20 and you need a lot of glasses in order to get drunk.

But you do not usually need to get silly drunk kind of drunk. I have a range of liquor at home which are the bases of cocktails. Most of them are duty free booze, of course. When buying booze in Langkawi, make sure you buy from the bigger, known shops and look out for the ones with some sticker on the bottle. There are lots of fake booze floating around.

When bored, I will take out the ‘cocktail bible’ and play around with the mixing of the liquor. It is not difficult to make Long Island Iced Tea, Margarita, Gin and tonic, tequila shots and other heady cocktails. A dash of this, a dash of that, put some ice, add some coke, sprite, tonic or orange juice and we have a cocktail already.

The above are miniature bottles of liquor, some bought from Langkawi at RM6 to RM8 per bottle. They are so cute so we cannot resist getting a few bottles.

Remember, alcohol is bad for your health. But hell, we only live once. Of course, don’t drink every day but only on special occasions.

Mixing cocktails is a little bit like cooking. You do not have to religiously follow the recipe. Instead, rely on your own tastebuds and get the type of mixture you enjoy. With some trial and error, a few experiments, anyone can make some kick-ass Long Island Iced Tea, Martini, Daiquiri, Pina Colada, Margarita and other classic cocktails because I am from the old skool. Here’s a Youtube video on how to make margarita cocktail.

Go stock your bar and practise mixing your own cocktail at home. You can easily Google for your favourite cocktail and find the video on how to mix them.
