Photos from Battle of the Chefs

I visited the Battle of the Chefs at the PISA stadium in Penang recently. This is the first time I went into the arena to view what’s going on. Normally, I do not enter the arena because we need to pay for the entrance fee.

When I was there, they were having some ongoing cooking competitions sponsored by rice and potatoes companies. In reality, a cooking competition is really tame, if you compare it to Gordon Ramsay or any one of those Iron Chef series. In fact, it is boring because you need to sit and wait for the potatoes to boil and etc.

However, I am really surprised with the finished products. From some humble potatoes, the chefs turned out western and asian dishes that looks so elegant and classy.

Other than the cooking competition, they also have fruits and vegetable carvings, styrofoam carvings, cake decorating competition, chocolate figurines like the car below and ice carvings.

One thing I observed is how fussy the judges are when they are standing there, next to the contestants. The judges were seen re-arranging some of the contestants things because they probably dislike mess. There was one judge who shook his head, indicating disapproval when one competitor in the cake decorating competition just chucked her rubber gloves, melted chocolate and everything else into a huge box because she no longer needs them.

The judge took out the melted chocolate and looked at it and shook his head. Wow, not easy being chefs because they must have good disciplines.

Bread baskets, i.e. basket made from flour.

I had resized my photos to 640 pixel but I am not sure why they turned out so dark and blue after resizing. You can view the complete album on my Flickr site – Penang Battle of the Chefs photos.

  1. babe_kl – There is no F words like Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen or sweats like Iron Chefs. So I think you didn’t miss much. However there are lots of Japanese, Indonesians, Thais and other countries’ chefs.
